We spent about an hour inside the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary at Kuranda near Cairns. There were thousands of butterflies, and the only way you could photograph them is if you happened to see one relaxing on a leaf, or eating nectar from the feeding bowls, where they might pause for a few seconds. It also helps if you have a good zoom lens and a motor drive. These are my favourite shots.
Big blue Ulysses butterfly, coming in to land on the nectar feeding bowl.
Bearing in mind it’s just about impossible to photograph a butterfly while it’s flying… here are the two shots I managed to get. This is a Cairns Birdwing butterfly and was definitely my favourite one… I love the green.
Oh, how I love the motor drive. And the 70-200mm lens.

Fantastic shots Trish! Isn’t the Ulysses just an amazing colour?
Beautiful shots, Trish!
